Extravascular lung water index measurement in critically ill children does not correlate with a chest x-ray score of pulmonary edema

INTRODUCTION Extravascular lung water index (EVLWI) can be measured at the bedside using the transpulmonary thermodilution technique (TPTD). The goal of this study was to compare EVLWI values with a chest x-ray score of pulmonary edema and markers of oxygenation in critically ill children. METHODS This was a prospective observational study in a pediatric intensive care unit of a university ho...

Description of the Clinical Course and Severity Score Progression in Critically Ill Children with Acute Bronchiolitis on High-Flow Nasal Cannula Support

Background and Objective: Bronchiolitis is one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality in children. High-flow nasal cannulas (HFNCs) are an alternative for managing moderate to severe cases. Our aim was to describe the outcomes in critically ill children with bronchiolitis who receive HFNC support. Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study of critically ill children wh...

Clinical studies of measuring extravascular lung water by the thermal dye technique in critically ill patients.

We measured extravascular lung water (EVLW) by the thermal-dye technique in a broad group of critically ill patients who had either acute cardiac or noncardiac illnesses. A portable AP supine chest roentgenogram, reviewed blindly, was used to classify patients as to the presence or absence of pulmonary edema; by clinical history we categorized patients into either a cardiac or noncardiac (ie, A...
